KAU Secures DGCA Approval for Drone Pilot Training Centre
The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has achieved a significant milestone with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) granting approval for the establishment of a Drone Pilot Training Centre at the KAU Agribusiness Incubator (KAU-ABI), College of Agriculture, Vellanikkara.
The DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO) marks a major step forward in integrating drone technology into agricultural research and practice. The centre aims to bridge precision farming research with real-world applications—optimizing spray volume, nutrient management, and field operations. Funded by NABARD, the initiative underscores KAU’s commitment to promoting sustainable, technology-driven agriculture.
Dr. B. Ashok, IAS, Vice-Chancellor, KAU, remarked that the new facility would help reduce production costs and create skilled employment opportunities in agriculture. “This initiative will give much-needed momentum to Kerala’s farming sector, particularly in addressing the challenge of labour shortage,” he noted.
Dr. K.N. Anith, Director of Research, highlighted that integrating KAU’s standardized farm technologies with drone-based delivery systems would enhance efficiency and profitability for farmers.
Dr. K.P. Sudheer, Head of KAU Agribusiness Incubator, stated that while KAU has previously conducted several drone operation and maintenance programmes, this is the first time it is offering an authorised Remote Pilot Training Course. “The RPTO will encourage young entrepreneurs and startups to embrace modern, technology-led farming,” he added.
Established in collaboration with M/s. Modha Aero Academy Pvt. Ltd., the new Drone Pilot Training Centre is set to empower a new generation of tech-savvy farmers and agripreneurs, driving innovation and precision in Kerala’s agricultural sector.
